4 Catching Options for the Royals
After the knee surgery to Royals starting catcher Salvador Perez, the Royals will be looking for a catcher to complement Brayan Pena until Perez can return. Here are four possible options:
Ivan Rodriguez: Rodriguez offers a strong, cheap veteran option for the Royals, as he would be able to consistently
handle the Royals young pitching staff as well as help some of the clubs young stars mature into stardom.
Josh Bard: Bard is currently playing for the Dodgers, but because of their significant catching depth many believe he could be acquired for a mediocre prospect or two. Bard, a career .254 hitter, has the legs and experience to catch significant innings from the clubs young staff and bridge the gap to Salvador Perez’s return.
Dioner Navarro: At the moment, Navarro is competing for the Reds backup catching job with Corky Miller, but Miller appears to have the upper-hand in the competiiton at the moment and Navarro is clearly available. While Navarro progects as a clear backup to Brayan Pena, he would offer the depth the club needs for little cost, both in terms of players and dollars.
Chris Stewart: Another easy option would be Chris Stewart of the Giants. Stewart is currently out of options, yet the Giants are also out of roster spots for him, so the Royals could easily claim the weak swinging Stewart off waivers to backup Brayan Pena.
All in all, while these aren’t the only options that the Royals have, they are four good options to bridge the gap to Perez’s return. So, who do you think the best fit is for the Royals?
